Djibouti Nature is committed to implementing a programme of environmental education and awareness to protect nature intended primarily for schools and local communities. This programme in collaboration with the “Service de l’Enseignement de base du MinistèRaptor Workshop participantsre de l’Education Nationale ” works with students at all levels and teachers in schools to raise awareness and reach through them, the wider communities. The environmental education programme helps target groups (teachers, students, general public and education sectors’ stakeholders) to understand importance of nature and how to coexist wisely with nature. Education, awareness and advocacy Programme feeds attitudes and behaviour change, skills, knowledge, values and prepares environmentally friendly-citizens who care and protect nature, and instilling a sense of environmental responsibility to our nation citizens. The Environmental Education programme will target Strategic objectives/results:

  1. Increase and enhance public awareness, knowledge and participation on nature conservation within local communities, students at all levels and the general public;
  2. Create awareness of the link between nature conservation and sustainable livelihoods as well as the importance of nature services that improve in the quality of people lives;
  3. Mainstream environmental issues into school curriculum and students involved in environmental education especially at ecologically sensitive areas and Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs);
  4. Ensure coordination, integration and collaboration in environmental education programs;
  5. Partner with Government, corporate and businesses to promote the integration of environmental education and conservation within corporate vision,

Target audience

This Environmental Education programme aims to support school environmental clubs to be self-sufficient in the organisation of round tables, create school nurseries, conducts door-to-door activities or field trips and awareness of nature protection as well as to produce publications on environmental issues. Further, it will cater for all age cohorts and socio-economic groups in the country to create awareness on conservation and natural resources management to a wide cross section of the society. The following groups will be targeted for environmental education;

  1. Wider public: To raise awareness of environmental issues and encourage members to participate in sound environmental initiatives to protect nature;
  2. Local community groups/nature resource users: to create awareness on sustainable use of resources and promote voluntary self-help initiatives in the community to reduce dependence on the resource in use;
  3. Media: to use media to highlight environmental issues in both print and electronic for education purposes;
  4. Government institutions: to contribute educating efforts destined to government authorities on environmental issues to formulate and implement sound environmental policies to manage natural resources.
